Why This Marathon Matters

This marathon brings together the general public, academia, government bodies, cultural enthusiasts, different institutions, tourism stake holders and communities to:

  • Promote awareness of Uganda’s 56 tribes and cultural diversity
  • Inspire young people to reconnect with their roots, identity and heritage
  • Support initiatives that transform culture into livelihood opportunities

  • Create a platform where culture meets action, innovation, and impact.

Proceeds from the marathon are transferred into an impactful community projects. With close coordination with the cultural leaders of local communities we work with, we restore indigenous tree species in places they have been cut to combat climate change or work on restoring or maintaining a significant cultural site such as a historical land mark, traditional kingdom palace, cultural museum or heritage site!

Every step you take contributes to building a future where culture is not only preserved but lived, valued, and empowering.

A Movement Beyond the Marathon

This initiative goes beyond the run.

As a build-up to the marathon, we host the Culture & Heritage Awareness Symposium. The Culture & Heritage Awareness Symposium serves as an intellectual and public engagement dialogue platform that complements (Pre-Event of) the annual Culture & Heritage Awareness Marathon.

While the marathon mobilizes communities physically, the symposium provides a space to reflect, share ideas, and design pathways that turn culture into practical action.

This year’s edition is happening on 16th April 2026 at Makerere University under the theme: “Turning Culture into Action: Harnessing Uganda’s Heritage for Sustainable Community and Tourism Development.”

The symposium creates space for:

  • Dialogue and knowledge sharing
  • Public engagement and innovation
  • Policy and institutional perspectives
  • Practical solutions for culturally based development and preservation

It is where ideas are shaped, partnerships are built, and a shared vision for culture-driven development is defined.

This combined approach ensures that culture is not only practiced and discussed, but utilized and turned into action.
